Catalogue of cryptomonad species and taxa below the species level

For each genus the applicable Code of Nomenclature is indicated (ICBN = International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, ICZN = International Code of Zoological Nomenclature). For species and taxa below the species level, when no Code is indicated both the ICBN and the ICZN apply.

1. Heterotrophic cryptomonads

Genus Goniomonas von Stein (ICBN, ICZN)

F. R. von Stein, 1878. Der Organismus der Infusionsthiere. III Abteilung. Die Naturgeschichte der Flagellaten oder Geisselinfusoria. I Halfte: pl. II, figure II, 1–6.

Synonym: Cyathomonas sensu Bütschli 1884 (p. 844, pl. 45, figures 8a, b); sensu Fisch 1885 (p. 74, pl. I, figures 25–38); sensu Ůlehla 1911 (p. 284, figures lc,d); sensu auctorum; non Cyathomonas Fromentel 1874 (206, pl. 27, figures 27, 28, 30, 31).

Type species: Goniomonas truncata (Fresenius) von Stein 1878 (pl. II, figure II, 1-6); basionym: Monas truncata Fresenius 1858 (p. 227, pl. X figure 42).

This genus is often referred to by the name of Cyathomonas Fromentel, but this is incorrect (see Larsen & Patterson, 1990). Three nominal species:

Goniomonas truncata (Fresenius) von Stein

von Stein, 1878, pl. II, figure II, 1–6.
Basionym: Monas truncata Fresenius 1858, p. 227, pl. X figure 42.

Goniomonas pacifica Larsen & Patterson

Larsen & Patterson, 1990, p. 810, figures 1g, 2a, 2b (type figure), 2c.

Genus Chilomonas Ehrenberg (ICBN, ICZN)

Vide C. G. Ehrenberg, 1838. Die Infusionsthierschen als volkommene Organismen. Ein Blick in das tiefere organische Leben der Natur: p. 30, pl. II figures V–VII.

Type species: Chilomonas paramaecium Ehrenberg. This was not designated by Ehrenberg himself – see Senn (1900, p. 168). Ehrenberg also used the spelling Chilomonas paramecium (Ehrenberg 1838, p. 300).

Twenty-five nominal species or taxa below the species level:

Skvortzow, 1957, p. 184, pl. 6 figure 52.

Chilomonas acuta Schiller

Schiller, 1929, p. 456, text-figure 22 a–e.

Note: This was later recombined as Cyanomonas acuta Schiller (1957) based on the presence of four or more grey-blueish plastids

Chilomonas acuta Schiller var. insignis Skuja

Skuja, 1956, p. 349, pl. LX figures 41–45.

Note: This has been raised to the level of a species by Javornický (1967) – see Chilomonas insignis below.

Chilomonas amygdalum Kent

Kent, 1880–82, p. 426, pl. XXIV, figure 49.

Note: This name is nomenclaturally illegitimate since no formal taxonomic protologue was provided.

Pringsheim, 1963, text-figure 28.1.

Note: This name is nomenclaturally illegitimate since no formal taxonomic protologue was provided.

Chilomonas cylindrica (Ehrenberg) Kent

Kent, 1880–82, p. 425, pl. XXIV, figure 50.

Basionym: Cryptomonas cylindrica Ehrenberg. Vide Ehrenberg 1838 (p. 42, pl. II figure XIX).

Note: Cryptomonas cylindrica was originally described by Ehrenberg (1838) as being green in colour.

Chilomonas naviculaeformis Schiller

Schiller, 1957, p. 36, pl. XII figure 56a–e.

Chilomonas obliqua Dujardin

Dujardin, 1841, p. 295, no illustrations.

Chilomonas oblonga Pascher

Pascher, 1913, p. 109, figure 153 (?).

Note: There are some difficulties concerning the typification of this species because Pascher’s Figure 153, indicated in the text (p. 109) as being relative to Chilomonas oblonga, is said to show Chilomonas ovata (no authority given) in the figure legends (p. 97). However, this is clearly not the C.ovata of Stokes (see below), which Pascher himself (1913, pp. 97, 109) justly removed from the cryptomonads. Furthermore, Pascher’s Figure 153 is not an original one since it reproduces Figure 1A of Ůlehla (1911), which Ůlehla referred to as “Chilomonas paramaecium, forma obtusa”.

Chilomonas oblonga Pascher forma minor (Czosnowsky) Javornický

Javornický, 1967, p. 46, pl. 3 figures 1–3.

Basyonym: Chilomonas minor Czosnowsky 1948, p. 13, pl. V figures 12, 13.

Chilomonas ovata Stokes

Stokes, 1888, p. 123, pl. II figures 27–29.

Note: This is very unlikely to be a cryptomonad – see notes for Chilomonas oblonga above.

Chilomonas sp. (?) Conn

Conn, 1905, p. 35, figure 95.

Chilomonas volvox Ehrenberg

Vide Ehrenberg, 1838, p. 30, pl. II figure V.
